poutine
I am so excited to try Canadian food! But, the only thing I know is poutine! I love crispy french fries!
Noun macaroni and cheese in a box
Kraft dinner
I know another food! Kraft dinner or "KD". It's basically just instant macaroni and a creamy cheese sauce in a box but, my Canadian friends eat this all the time!
Noun smoke flavoured thinly sliced fried potatoes
Hickory Sticks
I tried something very interesting called Hickory Sticks. They are kinda like potato chips but a different shape....like a salty stick!
Noun a pasty filled with butter, sugar, cream and sometimes nuts or raisins
butter tarts
I went to a Canadian festival, and it was all about butter tarts! A tart is like a very small flaky pie, with different filings. Tarts are not necessarily Canadian, but butter tarts are!
Noun a sweet with a coconut crumb-base, custard flavoured butter middle and chocolate topping
nanaimo bar
I had a traditional dessert from a place in British Columbia called Nanaimo! The sweet is called "nanaimo bar". Imagine that! I didn't like it because it was way TOO SWEET!
Noun a deep-fried pastry stretched out to look like the tail of a beaver
beaver tail
It seems that a lot of Canadian food is sweet! I had this strange thing called a beaver tail! Don't worry it wasn't made from a real beaver, it was like a flat, chewy donut.
Noun a sticky, sweet liquid produced from the sap of Maple trees
maple syrup
Talk about sweet! Have you tried real maple syrup (not the sugary sticky imitations)? Pour it on pancakes, french toast, even ice cream... and be ready for a delicious mouthful!
